Alberta Talent Spotlight: Zsofia Opra-Szabo

Alberta has a very large pool of award winning filmmaking talent, and we are dipping into it!

Zsofia Opra-Szabo hails originally from Budapest, Hungary, with a Hungarian University of Fine Arts degree in costumes, set, and puppet design. She has brought her talents to Edmonton, Alberta, where you will find her work on theatre sets, puppet productions and film animation. She received her MFA from the University of Alberta in 2015. Opra-Szabo focuses her work on visual arts, theatre and movement interaction. Her artistic vision brings theatre and puppetry into film, where the full understanding of how to establish a stage and lighting is clearly demonstrated in the settings her puppets interact in.

Opra-Szabo is an award winning film-maker, with multiple official selections also under her belt. 2017 saw her animated short Sofia selected for showing at various film festivals such as URBANWORLD in New York, the Montreal International Animation Film Festival, the ANIMAZE DAZE in Cannes. FAVA awarded her with Best Animation, Best Screen-write and Audience Choice for Sofia in 2018. This stop motion short featured the talents of Opra-Szabo as Writer & Director, and music from Gregory Mulyk.

Following up on Sofia, Opra-Szabo has released the stop-motion animated film short Tango Through Life, which is already well on it’s way with official selections over the past year, including at Edmonton’s own Short Film Festival.
